During the early part of the decade, when I was in college, I flirted with the idea of writing about sports for a living. That idea faded (you kind of have to, you know, be good at writing), but during that period I devoured as much sports journalism as a kid going to school in South Dakota could (remember: South Dakota was just getting the Internet in 2003). Of course I read the classics, but there was one dude writing at the Kansas City Star that I was obsessed with. I don’t religiously read his stuff anymore, but whenever I come across a new piece of his I get a little giddy. This is one of those new pieces.
